Exclusive Interview: Tim Mason

When it comes to pure talent and great career management, Tim Mason is the perfect example. His first release “The Moment” is the track that everybody has been talking about since the beginning of 2011. He has gained support from the biggest producer on the planet such as Tiesto, Dirty South, Sebastian Ingrosso etc.
We had the chance to talk with Tim right before the release of “The moment” tomorrow Wednesday April 6th on SIZE RECORDS. He talks about his career beginning, production, his relationship with Size etc.
Hi Tim, you are quite new in the industry, could you please introduce yourself; Where you are from? How old are you?
Hi there ! I am Tim Mason, i’m from Brighton and I’m 25.
How did you get introduced to music? (Do you come from a musical family or are you an autodidact, if so do you play any instruments?) Did you go to an audio engineering school? Who are your favourite producers?
I got introduced to music since I was little, and was pushed to learn an instrument by my family at a young age. I took up the piano. I was always into electronic music from a young age. I started djing from the age of 13. I didn’t go to an audio engineering school, it was all trial and error. I did however have help from engineers that guided me through in the beginning. My influences are DJ Sneak , Jaque La Conte , Todd Terry, Armand Van Helden, Daft Punk and many others. Too many to mention!
There is a huge hype around “The Moment”, which is your first track; released on Steve Angello’s mighty label Size records, getting played by Pete Tong, Tiesto, the Swedish House Mafia – this is quite impressive! How does it feel?
Being my first record, it is quite overwhelming!!!

When and how did you get in touch with Size/Steve Angello? Is it an exclusive partnerships or are you going to be releasing on other label?
It was sent to Size through my manager. It came straight from the studio and It wasn’t even mastered. Steve Angello heard it and loved it!
Can’t really say much more at the moment. :p
Are you the type of person who check blogs for reviews and reply to fans? Or do you feel there is no reason to and you try and ignore it to stay focus?
I do keep an eye on blogs and to what people have to say, and yes I reply to fans. They are creating the hype!!
Tell us about your current Production studio setup. Also, what hardware /Software do you use?
I use a mixture of hardware and software setup in my studio. I’ve got a few outboard compressors, distortion pedals and some other effect units. I love analogue synths, so do have quite a few setup. In regards to software I use Logic, Ableton and Reason. They are all really good in their own ways but it all comes down to Logic when I’m working on the arrangement.
What would you say are the important steps you had to make in your production to become a signed producer?
First and foremost I’ve always been 100% committed to it! I’m not sure to be honest, I just love making music, how it gets to being signed etc. is mainly through good Management.
‘The Moment’ has very similar sounds to what we hear Steve Angello use in a lot of his EP’s – is this something you and Steve worked on together, or was it simply him showing you some tricks and you taking it into your own hand?
Yeah it does have similarities hence why it’s on Size. :p
You signed your first track on SIZE, a reference in the EDM which could be considered as a milestone in a Producer career – what can you/we expect next?
I recently finished a remix of Alex Metric & Steve Angello feat Ian Brown “Open Your Eyes”, which has only just started to get promoted. I’m also working on my new single which I’m very excited about.

What are your big career plans? Do you have interest in setting up your own label in the future?
I’m enjoying whatever comes along, it’s too early to be thinking on things like that.
Any one you would like to shout out?
My manager George for all his incredible hard work, and of course to Steve and all at Size!
Final words?
Very excited and looking forward to be seeing most of you guys in Ibiza this summer!!
Thank you very much for your time Tim, we cannot wait to hear more from you!
