More female producers in EDM

I have always asked myself this question, how come there seems to have a good ratio female/male singers, but yet when it comes to Djing or producing, its mostly dudes. Why when we all think of a dj, the first image that comes through our head is a male?

With the rise of Electronic Dance Music in the music industry, we could expect that logically more and more female producers out there. Now we are not here to describe a misogynist industry – no – After all, there is some great examples of female producers out there; Maya Jane Coles, Nervo, Nina Kravitz etc. who are having great success in the industry. But we have noticed that the ratio male/female producer is not the same as any other music genre.

So what is it? here is a couple theory:

1. Computer Geek: To be a Electronic music producer, you need to master a few computer software such as Logic, Pro tools, Fruity Loops etc. These skills are related to the IT industry, which is mostly dominated by men. Yes, think about it; Bill Gates (Microsoft), Zach Zuckerberg (Facebook), Steve Chen/Chad Hurley/Jawed Karim (YouTube), the world most famous programmers and now billionaires are mostly men. Research of shown that women are in general more attracted by social interaction type industries such as Marketing, Communication, Human Resources, Tourism.
So the use of all these software to create music, and the need to “cave” in the studio in front of these software would repel most women from becoming Electronic producers? However these hours of production are just one part of the job, successful producers get the chance to tour where they meet fans etc. isn’t this social interaction?

2. Macho Macho Men: This is my second and last theory; an industry dominated by men, producing together, as friends. Djiing/Producing is like a brotherhood, where among friends we help each other. And like in High school, guys don’t hang out with girls (unless they have some other intentions…). So the theory is that men would almost instinctively just gather among them to produce, and would have no interest in bringing a girl to the group by fear to break the bro-code?

Like in anything, having a mix is a good thing. If the number of Girl producers increase, they would definitely bring something different perhaps even new to the industry, influence for the better.

Finally, far from my head to start a positive discrimination towards women, I would like to invite all producers; men & women to send us their production (bootleg, remix, original) to promo@jadorehousemusic.com

  • What’s going on?

Pardon Tomaa, but this is the most stupid article, I’ve ever been reading on J’adore. Who avoids girls from beeing DJ, producer, whatever? Men? Mate, c’mon.
What a pity, that you don’t respect the accomplishment of men, producing and DJing in this article. And also what a pity, that you bring a political gender discussion to J’adore House Music. Music should be music and not politics. his devaluates J’adore very much for me.The tags “discrimination” and “macho” are ridiculous, don’t you think so? You call men “machos” because they do what they love …??? Be a bit more respectful to your consexuals.Just becuase you wrote about it: Why didn’t a girl invent a “Facebook”? Why not an “Apple”? A “Windows”? Beatport? Tomaa, after reading this, I expect you to write much more articles about female producers and DJs in the future, many, many more. There should be a rate of at least 50% articles of female Producers and DJs in the future – or are you a Macho?I really like Nina Kravitz, I like Ida Engberg and Monika Kruse. My tags for this: “Misandry” “20th century feminist” “Genderist” “Why I quit visiting J’adore”

You should stepped back first of all. To the contrary, this article is very interesting and completely relevant to music. This might be a bit controversial regarding the theory part but could never be considered useless or irrespectful as it speaks only about facts and clear logic. Cheer up Tom! Stay yourself! You great!

Thank you Ashley. Again the goal of this post is to create a debate and try to understand why there is 95% men producers. I try to explained 2 theory, it doesn’t mean this is what I think is the truth but these are potential reasons and should be considered. I am not a feminist, but I believe men and women have equal potential in creating music so why such a difference only in the Electronic music sector.
I welcome more people to bring their opinions/theory to the debate.

This article is not here to discriminate male producers, but to try to understand why there is almost no women in this industry. You need to read the article a second time.
I welcome critics as long as they are argumented which is not your case, you just hightlights what you disagree with in my post but you are nit trying to answer the fundamental question: why is there 95% of male producer in this industry.

PS: Armin Van Buuren just released that his next episode of a state of trance will be all women as he is noticing the industry is unbalanced.

There is More to this element than just who makes the music. I am trying to do some research that would get at the root of the issue and idea.
