More female producers in EDM

I have always asked myself this question, how come there seems to have a good ratio female/male singers, but yet when it comes to Djing or producing, its mostly dudes. Why when we all think of a dj, the first image that comes through our head is a male?

With the rise of Electronic Dance Music in the music industry, we could expect that logically more and more female producers out there. Now we are not here to describe a misogynist industry – no – After all, there is some great examples of female producers out there; Maya Jane Coles, Nervo, Nina Kravitz etc. who are having great success in the industry. But we have noticed that the ratio male/female producer is not the same as any other music genre.

So what is it? here is a couple theory:

1. Computer Geek: To be a Electronic music producer, you need to master a few computer software such as Logic, Pro tools, Fruity Loops etc. These skills are related to the IT industry, which is mostly dominated by men. Yes, think about it; Bill Gates (Microsoft), Zach Zuckerberg (Facebook), Steve Chen/Chad Hurley/Jawed Karim (YouTube), the world most famous programmers and now billionaires are mostly men. Research of shown that women are in general more attracted by social interaction type industries such as Marketing, Communication, Human Resources, Tourism.
So the use of all these software to create music, and the need to “cave” in the studio in front of these software would repel most women from becoming Electronic producers? However these hours of production are just one part of the job, successful producers get the chance to tour where they meet fans etc. isn’t this social interaction?

2. Macho Macho Men: This is my second and last theory; an industry dominated by men, producing together, as friends. Djiing/Producing is like a brotherhood, where among friends we help each other. And like in High school, guys don’t hang out with girls (unless they have some other intentions…). So the theory is that men would almost instinctively just gather among them to produce, and would have no interest in bringing a girl to the group by fear to break the bro-code?

Like in anything, having a mix is a good thing. If the number of Girl producers increase, they would definitely bring something different perhaps even new to the industry, influence for the better.

Finally, far from my head to start a positive discrimination towards women, I would like to invite all producers; men & women to send us their production (bootleg, remix, original) to promo@jadorehousemusic.com

Joachim Garraud Birthday Million Dollar Line-up

People in general don’t really know who Joachim Garraud is, but he is one of the pioneer of the electro as we know it now, preaching his beats and his space invaders concept all over the world for more than 10 years. Besides that, he also co-produced the two first album of David Guetta, no big deal…

Check out this video of his birthday in 2005, he threw a private party in Paris and invited only his close friends, also some selected members of his forum and the line up could [nowadays] be worth about a million dollar:

  • David Guetta
  • Eric Prydz
  • Steve Angello
  • Sebastian Ingrosso
  • Axwell

News: Simon Cowell launching X Factor for Djs

It has been confirmed, Simon Cowell the CEO of SYCO – a production company responsible for TV show X Factor, and also music publishing company responsible for Leona Lewis “Collide” controversy – has announced today that he will be launching soon a new talent show to find the world’s best DJs. The show will be co-produced with Overbrook, production company owned by Will Smith (yes the same Hollywood star who saved the workd about 30 times in movies).

DJ’s are the new rock stars, it feels like the right time to make this show” said Mr Cowell in a statement. They should announce their broadcast partners for the US and UK market very soon.

In the meantime, I am trying to understand how could this work on TV; as there is a difference between a DJ and a producer. Most electronic artists are recognized and gain fame thanks to their production (try to find one EDM artist who tours around the world with no production?), if we look at the way X Factor currently works, does that mean DJs would do a performance of a few minutes in front of judges which will decide if they move on to the next round?Who will be the Judges?

This brings a lot of question and clearly the term DJ has become something very bankable for the entertainment industry. I am just very interested to see the format and how they are going to judge the DJs based on their performance and considering the music background they are coming from.

News: Marquee 2012 DJ Residencies

Since a couple of years Las Vegas has set the goal of becoming the Ibiza of North America, attracting the biggest DJs, opening the biggest clubs with parties going 24/7, even transferring one of North America biggest festival (EDC) from Los Angeles.

Among all the clubs in Vice city, XS nightclub and Marquee Nightclub are dominating the market, signing exclusivity with some of the biggest EDM producers.

Marquee just announced today they signed Above & Beyond, ATB, Benny Benassi, Chuckie, Dirty South, Erick Morillo, Kaskade, Markus Schulz and Redfoo for exclusive residencies in 2012.

With the rise of EDM in the music and nightlife industry – does this mean more and more DJs will sign residencies with clubs, slowly decreasing the role of event promoters?

News: MTV’s EDM Rookies To Watch In 2012

MTV just published their EDM Rookies to Watch in 2012 list and [drum roll] here are the names:

  1. Alesso
  2. Arty
  3. Deniz Koyu
  4. Hardwell
  5. Knife Party
  6. Nicky Romero
  7. R3hab
  8. Tommy Trash
  9. Zedd

I gotta say I wasn’t expecting much from MTV in terms of EDM knowledge, they pretty much discover Electronic music existed 2 years ago with David Guetta… But I consider this list more like “The list of breakthrough of 2011 who are ready to explode in 2012“, they all are pretty well renowned producers in their genre, have had big hits in 2011 and are very demanded by labels in the beginning of this year.

I am very interested to see who will get the most exposure this year as they seem to all have their supporters in the top DJ list, see as below:

  1. Alesso – supported by Ingrosso
  2. Arty – supported by Axwell
  3. Deniz Koyu – supported by Fedde le Grand
  4. Hardwell – supported by Tiesto
  5. Knife Party – supported by SHM
  6. Nicky Romero – supported by Guetta
  7. R3hab – supported by Afrojack
  8. Tommy Trash – supported by EDX
  9. Zedd – supported by Steve Aoki

My bet are on Alesso, since he got the biggest progression, even faster than AVICII in a ration: time/production.

Now a “real” upcoming  producer that I am expecting to breakthrough this year is Fareoh. I really loved his remix last year and I cannot wait to hear this guy original mixes coming in 2012.
